What should you not wash in the washing machine

A washing machine is one of the essential appliances to own. It is super helpful and cuts down the total workload by half. Automatic washing machines are even better and efficient. You just have to throw in the laundry, pour some detergent and start the cycle. After that, you will have to take out the washed and dried clothes without any added effort. However, even though it is a machine, it still needs care and attention to work effectively. If you take care of any machine, it will serve you better and longer. Similarly washing machine care is important for a seamless experience. Apart from thorough cleaning, you should also check the type of laundry you are putting in. There are some clothes that you should not wash in the washing machine such as:

Fluffy throw blankets

Cozy throw blankets are not suitable to wash in the washing machine. Machine wash causes them to shrink and lose their softness. The entire point of soft and cozy feeling vanishes. It is better to either spot wash them or dry clean them to maintain their original shape.

Embellishments

Embellishments are quite delicate to be thrown in the machine. They are delicately sewn which can be stuck in other items. The embellishments can also lose their shape due to the jostling. Furthermore, hot water can ruin the adhesive used for certain materials. Therefore, it is absolutely out of question to wash in the washing machine.

Memory foam pillows

Memory foam pillows have an open-cell structure just like foam. It also means that it absorbs moisture and the water will be absorbed too. During the spinning, the foam will start to break down while releasing water and completely ruin the pillow. Spot treatment is the only way to clean these types of pillows.

Pet hair covered fabric

Pet hair usually gets stuck on shirts and clothes when you cuddle with your kitty or pup. However, these can clump together and get stuck in the drain pipe. It will not only affect the wash quality but might ruin your washing machine as well. Always use a lint roller on clothes before putting them in the machine to avoid such mishaps.

Coins

We usually forget loose cash in our pockets. Coins not only make noise during the wash, which is annoying, they can also pass through the filter ending up in drain pipes. Since it is metal, it can destroy the drainpipe quite badly.

Items larger than the drum’s capacity

Avoid putting in huge blankets that are bigger than the capacity of the drum. It will suffocate the space and wash quality will be affected as well. The items in the machine should have enough space to move freely for the water and detergent to work effectively all over. Stuffing in bigger items will affect the wash quality and the stuff will get tangled too. That can lead to a broken agitator or a misaligned rotating drum in the worst-case scenario.

Rubber mats

Rubber-backed doormats that are usually found at the entrance to wipe away dirty shoes are not suitable to wash in the washing machine. The rubber can break down into tiny pieces and overpass the filter ending up in the pump. It can destroy the pump.

All-natural fabrics are not suitable to wash in the washing machine as their original shape can be ruined. Cashmere and wool are prone to shrinking in the washer and dryer. On the other hand, suede, leather, silk, and velvet stuff will lose their integrity in just one wash. It is best to keep them away from the washing machine and hand-wash them.
